I actually didn’t get to see this in person until last winter when I was staying in Queens. The property’s worth a lot so developers are planning to knock it down and build a high-rise, which is pretty sad. Accepting that no piece is ever permanent is a pretty fundamental aspect of graffiti, but i think 5pointz is so much more valuable than any new high-rise or shopping center can be because there is just so much history and culture in it. No other place I’ve seen really compares. Plus, it’s free art, which isn’t so readily available anymore! There’s all sorts of petitions out to save 5pointz or to get it declared a historical building and all. I don’t know how effective those will be, but I really really hope they leave it standing.
